FOR ALL THE HELP HE HAS GIVEN US.
Dear Classmates:
We thought of you with love today, but that is nothing new. We thought about you yesterday, and days before that too. We think of you in silence, We often speak your name. All we have are memories and your picture in a frame. God has you in his keeping, we have you in our heart.
There are five things that you cannot recover in life:
1. The Stone...after it's thrown
2. The Word...after it's said
3. The Occasion...after it's missed
4. The Time...after it's gone
5. A person...after they die. Treat each one with care
as life is so short....

We were informed by Gerald Wolf that classmate RUSSELL ANTKOWIAK passed away Friday Aug. 26th 2022. They remained life long friends having grown up together.
After High School Russell served with the Army in Vietnam. He then came back to Tempe where he had his Pillow Shop. He made all sizes of the best bean bag chairs. He also was an expert in hydroponics before anyone even knew how to grow that way. You might say Russell was an inventor of many things some that never got completed but he was always thinking of the next big project. He made the best roasted green chili's. Russell never married and spent the last few years in a VA home. Before he went to the VA facility Russell and whatever dog he had at the time would swim Canyon Lake almost every Sunday. I believe up until the last couple of years Russell was still driving the old van he bought from Harold Bloomer with the words Pillow Shop on the side of it. Everyone knew that Van. This gentle classmate and friend lived life his way and was always happy to sit and chat with you anytime.
A visitation for Frances will be held Friday, July 8, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Advantage Melcher Chapel of the Roses, 43 South Stapley Drive, Mesa, AZ 85204. Jane treasured her calling as the mother of their four children: Erik, Kristen (Scott Dawson), Richard (Chrissy) and Kent (Becky). She was a wonderful loving Mom and their home was the ultimate gathering place with lots of fun activities and the good food Jane made. As the children grew older, Jane returned to teaching for Mesa Public Schools for many years.

DOUGLAS GARDNER OBITUARY
Douglas Kay Gardner was born in Phoenix, Arizona on December 9th, 1944, to James Elden Gardner Sr. and Ellen Christin Henry. He passed away unexpectedly on February 11th, 2022.
His family settled in Mesa, Arizona, and he graduated from Mesa High School in 1963. He served as a full-time missionary in the North British Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Shortly after returning home, he met the love of his life, Delene Starks. They were sealed, for time and all eternity, in the Mesa Arizona Temple on September 15th, 1966.
He served our country honorably in the Army Reserves from 1966 to 1972.
Doug lived his life to the fullest. He worked hard, played hard, gave generously, laughed often, and loved deeply. The things he esteems as most precious are his eternal companion, Delene, his family, and his faith. He enjoyed relaxing in the mountains and on the beach, riding ATVs, fishing, boating, water skiing, and spending quality time with his loved ones

MATTHEWS, LARRY Passed away from Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma sometime in 2021.
There is not an Obit so we can't fine the exact date.
We did write up what we know about Larry's life in the obituary section.
I confirmed with two close classmates of Larry Matthews that unfortunately he passed away from Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2021. There was no service or obituary so it's very difficult for me to find the exact date of his death. I will add what I know about Larry Matthews He retired from Fleming Foods after working there for 38 years and 4 months. He continued to play baseball/softball throughout his life. He was sanctioned with the seniors of the world playing softball which he began at the age of 50. He played in seven World Championships and traveled the United States playing ball in senior tournaments. I know he played ball up until the time he could not. He enjoyed hiking and backpacking when not playing ball. I believe a couple times he backpacked from Mesa all the way to the White Mountains. Larry's wife preceded him in death and he often talked highly of her and the influence she had on him. I don't believe Larry ever missed a class reunion or class get together. He was lifelong friends with Tony and Jean Hyland, Dennis Balke, Louis and Sandy Dungy (64) among others. I know whenever I called him he was very kind, willing to discuss the class of 63 and always said yes to attending the reunion. He informed me of the lymphoma not long after the 55th reunion and was sure hoping to beat this cancer. He and many others will be missed at our 60th.

Stephen Robert Hale,
age 76, passed away on Friday, July 16, 2021, in his hometown of Mesa, AZ, exactly 20 years after the passing of his father Stephen G. on July 16, 2001.
Steve was born in Mesa, AZ on Friday, July 13, 1945, to Stephen G. & Ethel Mae Millett Hale, who were overjoyed to have their first child join their family. Steve learned the value of hard work from his parents and was an example to his three brothers and two sisters that would soon follow. Steve graduated from Mesa High School attended BYU, MCC and graduated from ASU in 1972. On August 10, 1967, Steve married his eternal companion, Melodee Lynn Cluff, daughter of Gwain and Eloise Tyler Cluff, in the Mesa Arizona temple. Their forever family has blossomed with the addition of 9 children, 38 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and counting.
Steve excelled in athletics, competing in track and field at BYU and earning a basketball scholarship for MCC. He especially loved playing church basketball and softball. His 6’ 4” frame and broad shoulders made him a powerful force on the court and on the field. He won many championships including the regional, state and church-wide home run derby. He loved rooting for ASU and BYU!
Steve was an exceptional missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served full-time in several countries in the Central America mission including Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Panama. The highlight of his mission was serving in Panama’s San Blas islands where he was among the first missionaries to set foot. He experienced miracles there and found much success teaching the people the stories of their ancestors contained in the Book of Mormon. He was beloved among the people where he served, and he continued to share the gospel and his mission experiences throughout his life. He later served another mission with his wife, Melodee, in the Maricopa County Jails and Phoenix West Prison where they shared the message of hope in Christ to hundreds of inmates; encouraging them to come unto Christ and change for the better. His lessons were outstanding and the inmates looked forward to hearing him share principles of a successful life.
In 1976, Steve moved his young family to Montevideo, Uruguay for a year where he worked for the operations and maintenance department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was given the assignment to ensure the institution of a new physical facilities program and the training of Stake Physical Facilities Representatives in the countries of Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. It was a unique opportunity to expose his children to a new culture and the Spanish language he loved. They made many good friends and memories while there.
Steve loved flying and would often take his family just outside the airport fence where they watched the planes take off and land right over their heads. He obtained his pilot’s license and took his family on many flights in his small Cessna. He even owned a hot air balloon which was a delight to many.
Steve held many professional titles through the years including ASU football trainer’s assistant, butcher’s assistant, car salesman, drywall construction worker, insurance agent, law office manager, private investigator, and pilot. But most of his life he spent in real estate–buying, selling, building, developing, and investing. Steve was a master negotiator! When he wasn’t at work negotiating land deals, he would peruse the classified ads for cars to buy. Melodee knew better than to get too attached to her car or home for very long, as they were frequently swapped out for another. The local dealerships knew and loved him as a frequent patron. Steve helped countless people purchase their vehicles and homes.
Steve loved authentic Mexican food! In the 1980’s he discovered a Mexican woman selling homemade tortillas and burros from inside a barber shop. He became a loyal patron and a vocal promoter of Carolina’s Mexican Food, which has grown to multiple storefront locations. Born and raised in Arizona, he developed a taste for the good stuff and passed on that affinity for good Mexican food to his posterity. Mexican food became a staple at most of his family events and holidays, and the Hales were known for delivering warm tortillas to lucky neighbors around Christmas time. His command of the Spanish language was excellent, and he loved using it every chance he could. Steve was also an expert gardener and connoisseur of navel oranges and watermelons.
Steve loved serving the Lord and serving his fellow man. He joined the Army National Guard and was soon appointed Platoon Leader. He was a volunteer member of the Mesa Police Reserve for several years. Steve was always quick to volunteer for service projects and taught his children the value of hard work. Every summer he would wake his children up early to pick corn at the Church farm. He was a diligent home teacher and fostered many relationships with ward members. He taught his children, through his example, the importance of volunteering, serving, and loving thy neighbor. He accepted and magnified every church calling and assignment including Young Men and Scouting leader, Stake Mission President, High Councilor, master Sunday School Teacher/President, Temple Ordinance Worker, and many other callings. He made many wonderful friends that he served with throughout his life.
Steve’s greatest joy was his family. His entire life was devoted to fulfilling his duty as father and husband to preside, protect, and provide for his wife and children. He taught them the principles of the gospel including faith, prayer, repentance, respect, compassion, and hard work. Side by side with his eternal companion Melodee, Steve was deeply rooted in the gospel with an unshakable testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ, which testimony and example they instilled in their children and grandchildren. Steve rejoiced in his children’s successes and accomplishments.
Steve is survived by his wife Melodee; children Steve, Matt (Sharon), Cheri (Rick) Smith, Crystal (Ben) Eberhard, Jeff (Amy), John, Robby (Chelsea), Rick (Taryn), and Ryan; his brothers David (Christine), Tom (Nola), Nathan (Kathleen); his sisters Nancy (Scott) Harrington, and Delia (John) Alston; brothers-and-sisters-in-law Ronnie (Polly) Cluff, David (Kathy) Cluff, Patsy (Terry) Allred, and Christi (Dean) Bradshaw; as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and his dear Uncle Richard Millett. Steve was preceded in death by his parents Stephen & Ethel Mae Millett Hale; parents-in-law Gwain & Eloise Tyler Cluff; and his dear granddaughter Katelyn Rose Hale.
Steve’s family would like to thank his many friends, relatives, business partners, neighbors, local ward and stake, Church leadership, and many others who have touched his and our lives and offered their support and condolences at this time.
A viewing and visitation will be on Friday, July 23rd from 6:00PM-8:00PM at the church on 3440 S Signal Butte Rd, Mesa, AZ. Funeral services will be at 10:30AM on Saturday, July 24th at the same location.
Steve will be dearly missed until that unimaginably joyful day when we are all reunited.
I'm so sad to announce the passing today of classmate John Hill from a courageous battle with cancer. John married Dickie Coombs sister Ruth and they resided in Coolidge.
We were informed of his passing by his son JB.
This is the tribute JB put on Facebook today about his father:
It is with a heavy heart that I share that my father has passed away and joined the Lord. As this is a sad day, it is also a glorious day to remember a life lived well. During this process I have been humbled more than once. Watching him battle with courage, grace and a strong Christian disposition has been a lesson I will learn from. Thank you will never be enough for all those that graced us with visits, calls, texts, help and most importantly prayer. I have learned that while we may be born into one family, marry into another family there is none that is as important as your family in Christ. Being saved and knowing what awaits us as Christians eases my mind and heals my heart. The love shown me and my family during this time will be life changing. Thank you Dad and I love you!!
HYLAND, TONY Passed away Dec. 4th 2020

I'm sad to announce the passing of Barbara Halls Householder on Aug. 18th at 9:30PM.
Barbara has been in hospice and ill for quite some time. She was bedridden and in and out of the hospital many times. She had great faith and her suffering is now over.
Barbara was owner of Fun City costume store in Mesa for many years.
This is the message her daughter Stacy left on Facebook:
She DID it! Barbara Louise Halls Householder crossed the Finish Line of Life Last night shortly after 9:30pm. She was surrounded by her sweetheart and her children and their spouses. There was also a live feed where the rest of the family could “attend”. Her passing was everything we could have ever wanted for her. We were holding her hand as she took her last earthly breath. It was a peaceful and gentle breath. She shined so brightly here on earth and shines even brighter in heaven. We can feel her joyfulness to be free of the pain and long suffering. We will always miss her. But we know we will be with her again, some day, and what a special reunion that will be. She is more alive than ever right now! We love you forever, Mom.
HIATT, SUSAN JOYCE BIGGS Passed away on Aug. 8th 2020
Susan and her husband Tom were heading home
to Safford when they were killed in an tragic accident.
Thomas and Susan Biggs departed this mortal life side by side while returning home to Safford on August 14, 2020, when they were suddenly detoured to their Heavenly home. They are reunited with their parents and Tom’s brother and sister. They will be greatly missed by their loving family and so many others whom they consider their eternal friends. Thomas Worth Biggs was born on July 16, 1941 to Ellis and Nora Biggs in Mesa Arizona. He was the great grandson of his namesake and Lehi, Arizona Pioneer, Thomas Biggs. Dad taught us that when Brigham Young called these pioneer families to settle Arizona that they should be large families with sufficient means to get there but not enough to come back to Utah. We have been here ever since. Tom graduated from Mesa High School. At the age of nineteen, Tom was set apart as a missionary to Brazil by Spencer W.Kimball where he served for three years. He graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in Business Agriculture. He began his career with the Valley National Bank In Mesa, then became the manager of the bank in Saint Johns. Tom was always wise beyond his years, called as the Stake President of the Saint Johns Arizona Stake by Apostle, Elder Boyd K. Packer at the age of 36. He also served the community as President of the Rotary Club and on many other boards and commissions. After moving from St. Johns to Safford, Tom was called to serve as the Bishop of the Safford 5th Ward and later as a member of the Gila Valley Temple Presidency. He also served as a member of the Eastern Arizona College Governing Board. He was a faithful husband, father, grandfather and servant of God. He was a steady and calm force for good, exuding kindness and genuine interest in everyone he met. He was a studious and deliberate decision maker, and had a humble and unwavering approach to life. Susan Joyce Hiatt Biggs was born in Mesa, Arizona on November 8, 1945 to Dr. Rudger P. Hiatt and Ruth Brinton Hiatt. Susan was the eldest of seven and an accomplished musician, artist and educator. Susan was always happy and hummed her way through life. She was the epitome of Motherhood, raising her nine children who were her priority and joy. She served as Stake Relief Society President, Stake Young Women’s President, and Temple Assistant Matron. She served tirelessly in scouting inspiring her five boys to achieve the rank of Eagle. Susan was a graduate of Mesa High School, attended Brigham Young University and graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in English. She loved to read and teach High School English focusing on students who were excluded from traditional school. Her children fondly referred to her as the paparazzi. She jokingly said that “if there wasn’t a picture then it didn’t happen”. She kept us all informed of the family through her Biggs family blog. She carefully crocheted miles of blankets, baby blessing clothing and stuffed animals for her grandchildren. She never missed a birthday and sent an original artfully drawn card to each family member. She was the most approachable, caring, faithful, joyful person we know, always providing us with the reassurance that all would be well. Tom and Susan were married on June 19th, of 1964 in the Mesa Arizona Temple, recently celebrating their 56th Anniversary. They have lived in Mesa, Saint Johns, and Safford. They served a mission together in Portugal and loved the people and their experience everywhere they resided. They served together in the Temple and have rarely been seen apart. They bought a 2nd car for which Tom often expressed regret because they never used it. He said that when they go somewhere, they always go together. Mom taught her children to hold hands with their spouse when they prayed so the Lord would know that you come as a set. Together they called and sang Happy Birthday to every one of their children, and their children’s spouses who they considered their children, and to their grandchildren on their special day. Tom and Susan are survived by their 9 children, their spouses, and 50 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Nathan and Shauna Biggs, Joel and Stephanie Biggs, Daniel and Connie Biggs, Rebecca and Scott Evans, Jeremy and Erika Biggs, Rachel and Tony Alder, Esther and Shad Brown, Thomas and Jennifer Biggs and Mary and Tyson Richins. As their children and grandchildren, we believe when we meet our Savior, Jesus Christ, we will already be familiar with His characteristics and attributes because we have witnessed these brilliantly reflected in the expressions of love and selflessness by our humbly remarkable and practically perfect parents. A visitation will be held on Thursday evening, August 20, 2020, from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Safford Stake Center with private family funeral services on Friday, August 21st, at 1:00 p.m. The public is asked to watch on Facebook Live on the McDougal's Caldwell Funeral Chapel Facebook Page. "Like" the page and then scroll down to find the services a few minutes before they start.
GENEROUS TO A FAULT
She was a devoted mother to her only child, Sarah Fry Lyman, and loving wife of John Fry for 51 years. Sarah later married Ari Lyman. Pam left behind two sisters, Sally and Mellie Horath. She loved antiques and eventually started a business with John. Pam always made room for family and friends when they had no place to go, despite living in a small home most of her life. She was generous to a fault. It was her faith in Jesus and love of life that helped get her through a 30 year battle with cancer.
LIFE OF EXCITEMENT, ADVENTURE & TRAGEDY
Pam always liked to do things in a big way. In college she was popular as a Pom Pom girl who learned to trick ride and flamenco dance to compete in Beauty Pageants. Her hard work paid off in 1961 when she won Miss Apache Junction, Arizona. She modeled professionally and taught modelling. Pam lived a life of excitement and adventure–always on the go and learning something new, a perpetual student. She eventually became a furniture buyer and ironically at lunch one day met her future husband John Fry at the local “Chuck Wagon.” After a short romance, they married in 1967.
Pam loved Jesus so much that she was supportive of her husband John to attend Moody Bible Institute. She prayed with him and was always by his side supporting him through college. Four years later, their only child Sarah was born. The Frys had an exciting life together often travelling to California for their antique business. Sadly their daughter Sarah suffered a nearly life-threatening car accident in 1990. They almost lost Sarah. The stress of it all likely contributed to Pam being diagnosed with breast cancer even though Sarah miraculously recovered.
FRAGILE IN BODY, NEVER IN SPIRIT
Pam’s extensive battle with cancer was greatly aided by the ongoing comfort of John and Sarah. Through Pam’s plight with cancer, she became exceedingly sensitive to foods and toxins.Sarah described her mom as a canary in the coal mines during these times. The canary was sensitive to carbon monoxide enough to alert miners to escape safely. Pam wanted to save herself and help save others lives who also suffered with life threatening conditions—always researching with her daughter, hopeful someday for a cancer cure. Despite being fragile in body,
Pam was never fragile in spirit! Sarah fondly remembers her mom praying with people whenever the Holy Spirit prompted her. It wasn’t often that these promptings happened, yet clearly it was inspired by God. This even happened once in the middle of a cancer-therapy session when Pam prayed for another patient. Most of all, toward the end of Pam’s life, daughter Sarah remembers how her mom ministered to others at the assisted living home. Pam always enjoyed watching her daughter Sarah’s Messianic dance. At 75 years old, Pamela passed away with metastatic breast cancer on June 17, 2020.
Forever love
Now Pam’s Dancing in Heaven with her ever-loving husband John.
Adelaide Ann (Maresca) Van Slyck, 75, passed away on May 19, 2020 in Phoenix, AZ. Ann was born on March 5, 1945 in Brooklyn, NY to Frank and Adelaide (Collmer) Maresca. She is survived by her husband of 43 years Tom Van Slyck, brother Tony Maresca (Barbara), Sister-in Law Susan V. Jones, Brother-in-Law Don Holt, nephews Christopher Maresca and Parker Jones, niece Sarah Maresca DuPont (Josh) and grandniece Ainslie DuPont. She and her family moved from Brooklyn to Mesa, AZ in 1961. She graduated from Mesa High School in 1963 and, then while working full time at Southside Hospital in Mesa to support her family, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Arizona State University in 1968. She also received her RN certificate in 1968. Subsequently, she received her Master of Science in Nursing from Arizona State in 1973, and then accepted the position of Associate Director of Nursing at St. Luke's Medical Center in Phoenix. Not content to "just do her job", she passed all requirements to become a Certified Nursing Administrator Advanced. Following the departure of mentor Nancy Higgerson, she accepted the position of Vice President of Nursing at St. Luke's Medical Center. After leaving St. Luke's Health System in 1982, she formed her own nursing consulting firm, AVS & Associates, and in 1985 incorporated as Van Slyck & Associates, Inc. Her very first client of AVS & Associates was the University of Phoenix, for which she developed an undergraduate nursing program. In 1985 she earned both the prestigious Salsbury Award from the Arizona Hospital Association and the Outstanding Alumni Award from the Arizona State University College of Nursing. In 1992, she was elected to Fellowship in the American Academy of Nursing. She met the love of her life, Tom Van Slyck, in 1975 and they were married May 26, 1977. She sold her firm in 2006 and retired in 2007. Retired, yes - but not withdrawn. After learning about the mission of Project C.U.R.E. she went to work creating the opportunity to send 3 shipping containers full of medical supplies to Sri Lanka. She also loved to travel and enjoyed cruising. She took multiple trips to Belize, which she often referred to as her holy place. A quiet patron of the arts, she enjoyed the ballet, opera and plays. She also tremendously enjoyed going to the Heard Museum, the Phoenix Botanical Garden, Native American ruins and Santa Fe, NM to visit the pueblos. With the current COVID-19 crisis the family held a small, family only service, and she is now interred in Mesa. Those wishing to do so are encouraged to make a donation to the Arizona State University College of Nursing for Nursing Scholarships. SCHOSTAG, DARLENE JANET ASHLIN
Passed away April 15th 2020
Darlene Ashlin. My wife, My life.
Passed away, Wednesday morning April 15th, 2020.
Darlene and I were married May 16th, 1964.
We had 56 years together, as husband and wife, best friends, and partners in everything we did.
Mostly what we did, was ministry, in various capacities for over 40 years, but most of that was Childrens Ministry. Darlene was totally committed to ministering the Gospel of Jesus Christ to children, teaching them that they can have a relationship with God.
For a little lady, she sure left a big footprint.
For many of us, life on this earth, will never be the same .
Darlene Janet Ashlin, age 74 of Abilene, Texas, passed away peacefully at home, April 15, 2020, with her husband at her side.
Darlene was born August 10, 1945 in Mankato, Minnesota. Her family moved to Waterville, MN. where she attended elementary school. Then moved to Mesa, AZ. where she graduated High School.
She married William (Bill) Ashlin in Prescott, AZ May 16, 1964. They moved about the country, where Darlene gave her life to the expansion of God's Kingdom and blessed countless people with her selfless service and joy. For nearly 30 years, Darlene was totally committed to ministering the Gospel of Jesus Christ to children, teaching that they can have a relationship with God. THIERBACH (THIERBACK) JOHN PASSED AWAY MARCH 2ND 2020
We were informed by Gary Mendoza that classmate John (Thierback) Thierbach passed away March 2 2020. John was quite the athlete in HS and after. He suffered a massive stroke many years ago. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family. I were notified a few years ago the yearbook had the spelling of John's name wrong. The correct spelling should have been Thierbach.
I was lucky to able to consider John a friend in our high school days. We had some great times. When it comes to the three main sports-- football, basketball, baseball-- no one was better. RIP John. Dave.

We were informed by Phyllis Culver Kavosick that Ronald (Ron) McGale passed away on Easter Sunday April 21, 2019. Phyllis and a couple other classmates are taking care of the arrangements because apparently Ron has no known relatives.
There's been queries to time and place for Ron's memorial. Ron's body was accepted as an organ donor, as he requested.
Several classmates held a memorial service for Ron on July 16 2019.
I lost track of Ron over the years. I now wish I had put forth more effort in keeping in touch. After HS, Ron and I and another Mesa High graduate spent so much time together. He was the funniest man I've ever known and could make me laugh until the tears ran. One of the strangest things we did was after the Presidential election, where Goldwater lost, Ron wanted to go to his house. I didn't think we'd get beyond the guard, but when we arrived there was no guard, and no locked gate. We drove up the spiral drive way and the 3 of us walked up to the door. Ron did the talking and I never opened my mouth. A woman in a white uniform came to the door, in her stocking feet and Ron said "hi is Mike home" the woman said he was out for the night and then Ron said, "well is Barry around" and the woman said "I'm sorry the Senator is out of the states for a couple of weeks, would you like to leave a message?" and Ron simply said "tell him that Ron stopped by" and we walked away. I don't know what he would have done if Barry Goldwater or his son Mike would have been home, and Ron didn't know either. We talked about that a lot and laughed so much. He was something and I'll forever remember this sweet man. Rest in peace Ron....you were loved.

Service Date: 05/15/2018
Service Time: 10:00 AM
Service Location: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - 20th Ward, 848 North Westwood, Mesa, Arizona
Interment: Green Acres Cemetery, 401 North Hayden Road, Scottsdale, Arizona 85257
The family of David Ross wishes to notify family and friends of his passing on April 29, 2018. He was quite possibly the most attentive husband, devoted father, and extraordinary poppa this world has ever known. He is survived by his wife, Nanci; son, Chris; daughter, Jeni; and grandson, Beni.
Dave was born on a farm in Bucyrus, Ohio on April 20, 1945, to Frances and Clarence Ross. Clarence taught Dave the importance of treating your spouse with tenderness and respect. Although his mother passed away when he was only five years old, her warmth and kindness shaped Dave; these qualities became his defining characteristics throughout his life. Dave moved with his family to Arizona in 1961, where he attended Mesa High School and graduated in 1963. He worked in the audio/video business his entire life as a manager and owner, though he never had extravagant electronics in his own home, where his family often joked of their longing for a speaker to hear music in the house. Dave was known to all as a “people person.” He could strike up a meaningful conversation with ANY individual he met. He was an expert at building authentic relationships with others and was gifted at making those around him feel valued and respected.
Dave was an avid, voracious reader, car enthusiast, sous vide cook and an expert at stashing Peanut M&M’s. Each morning, he delighted in meticulously making lunch for his wife, Nanci, and graciously driving her to work. His math and science prowess proved invaluable when patiently helping his grandson, Beni, with homework each night. He was known by family, friends and coworkers as the problem solver, the fixer, and the protector. His greatest joy was spending as much time as possible with Nanci, Beni, Jeni, and Chris. He loved his life and he adored his family. He made them the center of his world.

Victoria “Vickie” Jane Porter showed such spirit and strength until the moment she left us. Known as “Sugar” to her closest family and friends, she valued time spent with loved ones and each day conveyed the importance of family. Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, Vickie would find herself moving to Mesa where she would meet her lifelong husband, Michael Porter, at Suncrest Apartments. They married on December 23rd in, 1967, moved to several states for the six years of Michael’s Navy service, and then found their forever home in Arizona where they raised two daughters, Tammi and Tawna.
Vickie was known to spend countless hours volunteering at the girls’ schools in the classroom, the PTA, and Booster Club. When not busy with these activities, she could be found on the sidelines cheering during multiple seasons of all different sports. Vickie continued her passion for family while providing daycare to each of the five grandchildren. Known as “Mama” to the grandkids, she directed a bit of a redesign of the home to make it the ultimate play land with ball pits, painting easels, a trampoline, basketball hoop, and a multitude of other toys. The grandkids would find plenty of moments to aim their water guns and pool toys in her direction to leave their mark on her or her windows. As the grandchildren grew, her importance of family and building memories continued as she showed ongoing support in all of their activities. Vickie enjoyed the many hours at soccer, football, basketball, tennis and volleyball courts, softball and baseball fields, gymnastics meets, and dance shows watching each of her kids and grandkids grow and celebrating their accomplishments.
Her loss is large but as she would want, our many special moments are smiled upon and the traditions she shared will forever be carried on. Vickie is survived by her husband, Michael Porter, her two daughters, Tammi Taylor (Mark) and Tawna Wilkinson (James), and five grandchildren, Zachary, Jakob, Michael, Matthew, and Megan. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Napoleon and Victoria Racicot, her mother, Geraldine, and her adoptive father, David C. Cartwright. Vickie would be pleased if donations would be made to Hospice of the Valley.

DAWNA BURNHAM GREER Dawna passed away Jan 17th 2014 and her funeral was in Heber on the 25th.
She was a wife, mother, grandmother and nurse who always helped others.
Dawna fought courageous fight with brain cancer.
Dawna Rose (Burnham) Greer, 68, of Heber, living with family in St. George, Utah, died peacefully Jan. 17, 2014, from a courageous battle with brain cancer. She was born May 30, 1945, in Red Mesa, Colo., to the late Clinton and Rose Burnham. Her family later moved to Mesa, where she enjoyed being reared by her parents and growing up with her eight siblings.
After graduating from Mesa High School, she attended Northern Arizona University, where she obtained her nursing degree and met her husband, Frank Greer. Being perfect for each other, they were married in the Mesa LDS Temple for time and all eternity on April 16, 1965. After working as a nurse to put Frank through school, she wanted nothing more than to become a mother. She felt her primary responsibility in life was to love, teach and prepare her four children to be upright citizens and to have testimonies of our Savior Jesus Christ. She was extremely proud of her children and especially loved the grandchildren they produced.
Dawna had many talents and blessed the lives of others by sharing them. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many callings which included; Relief Society president, young women’s adviser, Activity Committee chair, employment specialist and temple worker. She was a master seamstress, spending many hours sewing quilts for her children, grandchildren and neighbors, or sewing prom dresses for her daughters. One of her favorite ways to serve others was by making and giving away blankets for humanitarian aid. She spent countless hours doing genealogy and helped create an 800-page Burnham family history book. She enjoyed using her nursing skills by helping those who were sick, including those with terminal illnesses, assisting those who had medical questions and advising them as to treatment options. She worked tirelessly for the past several years to comfort and assist her husband, who also suffers from the deteriorating effects of cancer. She was a talented artist who painted portraits of her children, decorations on business windows and backdrops for school and church plays. She loved to write poems and had fun using this talent for family scavenger hunts and church activities.
The talent she was most known for was her green thumb; she had one of the most beautiful yards in Heber. She did not keep this talent to herself. She taught others about her gardening passion whenever she got the chance. She could be found helping neighbors beautify their yards, giving them plants and taking her prettiest flowers to church for everyone to enjoy. It gave her great satisfaction knowing that many people used her yard for wedding and family pictures.
Her many talents, compassion and unwavering testimony of our Savior Jesus Christ touched many lives. She will be missed tremendously by her family, friends and community.
She is survived by her husband, Frank Greer; children: Wendy (David) Skousen of Lakeside, Lance (Shannon) Greer of St. George, Utah, Kristal (Jason) Joy of Salt Lake City, Utah, Kandra (Jared) Owens of Las Vegas, Nev.; 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clinton and Rose Burnham, sisters Miriam and Shirley, and son Dallin

I first met Howard in Mrs. Smith's 5th grade class at Franklin Elementary School in Mesa, AZ. I was facinated with Howard & Harold being twin boys. I have twin sisters and they were the first twin boys I had the opportunity of knowing. Time has erased so many of my memories but I do remember the first time I ever saw them in crisp levis, plaid short sleeve shirts and polished shoes very neat. The things that were important then... I'm glad we crossed paths and to Howard's family, I am so sorry for your loss. Blessings, Linda Kurtz Smothermon

Carol remained dear friends to many in the class of 63. She even traveled on vacation several times with a group of 5 or 6 girls from our class. She had a smile that would light up the room and never ever talked bad about anyone. Carol fought a long (5 1/2 year) battle with ovarian cancer taking any chemo they would give her. She suffered greatly the last month or two and is finally at peace. She leaves behind her two daughters and three beautiful granddaughters. Her sister Midge was also by her side day and night. Carol requested no funeral. Her daughters held a beautiful memorial celebration of life at Carol's home on Sat. July 21st. 2012. Thank-you for calling about Bonnie. She was such a good friend from way back.
She had so many health trials over the years that should have taken her but she just refused to go. I had decided she would be here till the Millenium.

Sandy and Allen Dugger were our best friends when Gary Clement and I were first married. We bought houses around the corner from each other. My mother was even Bobby's babysitter! Allen and Gary had been best friends since kindergarten. It was so very tragic when Gary accidently shot Allen at only age 21. We were with Sandy at the hospital waiting and praying that Allen would make it, but it was not too be. I sadly lost touch with Sandy and their son, Bobby, and will always remember her bubbly personality and beautiful smile. She was such a loving mother and wife and friend.

From June Clabaugh McCulla on February 15th, 2010
Sandi was a very special person. She married Allen Dugger, a dear friend of my brother. It all seems so long ago now. Allen died in a tragic gun accident when we all were so young. Sandi was left a very young widow with a little boy, Bobby, to raise. My brother was very close to Sandi and treasured their friendship. Over the years we all drifted a part and Sandi and I only talked now and again. But she had a heroic nature and crammed more memories into her life time than most people can imagine. So I can only remember her as a very young girl telling me she was going to marry Allen - or maybe Butch. But I'm sure if she had not been here the world would have seemed smaller and less alive.

ROBERTA GAYLE (BERTA) LEWIS PASSED AWAY NOV. 14TH 2009
AFTER A LONG BATTLE WITH CANCER
PLEASE VIEW THE TRIBUTE PAGE AND
SPECIAL MESSAGES FROM
MARCIA CHALK WADE
AND LINDA ROWAN PRIES
1945 ~ 2009 Roberta Gayle Lewis, age 63, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2009, surrounded by loving family members after a decades-long battle with various cancers.
Known by her family and friends as "Berta" or "Berd," she was born December 12, 1945 in Los Angeles to John and Catherine (Peggy) Lewis. Berta was the third of nine; her parents, along with sisters Bonny and Kathryn, preceded her in death.
Berta grew up in Southern California and Arizona, where she loved spending her childhood with her three sisters, Christine, Kathryn and Bonny. From an early age, Berta displayed talents in the areas of music, acting and athletics. She made piano playing look easy and learned to play with very little formal instruction. The house was always filled with music when Berta was around. A gifted actress, Berta's favorite role in high school was Anne Frank in "The Diary of Anne Frank" at Mesa High School in 1963.
After two years at Brigham Young University, she moved to Los Angeles where she began her career in the motion picture industry, working for a variety of companies including Walt Disney, Paramount, and Twentieth Century Fox. In 1971 Berta was the victim of a serious automobile accident that severely damaged her leg. While she was able to keep her leg, she lived with chronic pain from that accident for the rest of her life and eventually required the help of a cane to walk. Throughout adversity, Berta always found the bright side and rarely complained about her physical limitations.
In 1981 while living in Utah she was diagnosed with breast cancer and began treatments. After her breast cancer was in remission, she returned to California where she worked until a different form of cancer (mantle cell lymphoma) was discovered in 1997. Again, she beat the odds.
Berta brought excitement and energy to everything she did. Her life was a fascinating story and she assumed that everyone else had just as fascinating a story waiting to be uncovered. She greeted everyone with a smile and an encouraging word. Berta was a wonderful listener and genuinely cared about others. She will always be remembered as our beloved sister and "Crazy Aunt Berd."
Berta is survived by six siblings: Christine Lewis Owens (William) of Phoenix, AZ; John Lewis (Ann) of Orem; Barbara Lewis Camp (Lowell), Jeffrey Lewis (Kathleen), and Diana Lewis Wakimoto (Takema) of Alpine; and David Lewis (Celeste) of Highland; along with 29 nieces and nephews, two birds, Tinker and Bell, and generations of snails.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at 11 a.m. in the Stonewood Stake Center (450 S 100 W, Orem). Viewings will be held Wed, Nov. 18 from 6-8 p.m. at Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary (495 S State St, Orem), and preceding the funeral at the Stake Center beginning at 9:30 a.m. Interment at the Spanish Fork City Cemetery.
Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sundbergolpinmortuary.com.
I found Berta about 3 years ago in Orem, UT, by chance. We talked many times after that, and she always made me feel better about life. She was truly a giving, kind, Christian person. I miss her very much.

A new star was placed in the heavens November 14...the day that Berta Lewis passed away. She had fought four cancers during her 63 years plus a devastating car accident which altered the rest of her life. Throughout all the obstacles which came her way, Berta never gave up. She had more tenacity, bravery, fortitude and faith than any of my friends or patients I have known. She, in the midst of all her problems, was the one still reaching out to others, ...caring, loving, and showing her positive, many times comical, attitude.
Berta was one of a kind. What a privilege it has been to know Berta as a childhood friend....and even more so as an adult. She and I reconnected through emails the last five years and I have saved everyone of them. I will let Berta talk to you in the next few lines...including the last email she wrote a few weeks before her passing.
"Life is Good. I just hope I can retain this feeling and not ever get numb to feeling healthy. We take too much for granted, don't you agree. I am so glad I feel terrific. Yippee!"
"Keep in touch with your friends. You never know when you will need each other. Keep the faith and do not forget to run in the rain. ..........I never want it to be said that I did not live....or run though the rain. Love, Berta"
"So life continues to be good and I am as happy as a lark. I have no complaints. Life is really looking good to me at this time. Yes!"
"Thank you so much for your prayers. I feel all of them and I am beyond grateful. Love, Berta"
"I have been alive 12 years since the diagnosis of mantle cell lymphoma, so I have no business complaining. The fact is, though, since I have been doing so well, it is hard to realize that I actually may die."
"It is my friends who are keeping me gong. I just cannot tell you how much it means to me that you are standing by and supporting me in such a tender way. You are a very positive support for me."
"Sometimes I wonder if it is really worth it to endure this kind of discomfort just to remain breathing. Then I have to remember that I still have good days, and as long as that is the case, I will continue to fight the Beast. Okay, that is all for now.....and the beat goes on! Love, Berta"
Berta's last message to me and others was a sign that Berta knew her time was short...and it was her way of summing things up.
"First of all, I want everyone to know that I love you very much. I feel your support and love and I am fortunate beyond words. As always, I love you. Berta"
Berta will never die. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. Her words will echo in our minds...and the twinkle in her eye will continue each time we see a picture of her. And all you have to do is look up in the sky at night and the brightest star you see will be Berta smiling down and saying one of favorite sayings, ....."and the beat goes on." Thank you God for giving us Berta and God bless you, Berta, for touching so many lives. With love,
Linda Rowan Pries

I have such fond memories of Berta in Mesa High Bunnies. She made me laugh, took time to share her inner thoughts and truly cared about others. I was so glad to reconnect a year ago. We shared a brief synopsis of our lives and in true Berta style, she made all of the things she has suffered seem unimportant and instead talked about how happy she was to be "HOME" with her family, after all these years and be sharing the most important things with them.
Berta touched my life and I will remember her with love. Thanks, Berta.

Vickie and I met at East Mesa Jr. High in 7th grade. We became very close friends from that time. We had a lot of fun times together, crusing main street in Mesa, and going to Riverside dance on South Central in Phoenix. I have a lot of good memories of the two of us. We worked at the "Pioneer Drive In Theater" together. My sister and Vickie's brother are married, so really we were family. I will miss Vickie so much but I do have all our good memories. I do miss you VICKIE.
