Larry Matthews
2021-12-01
I confirmed with two close classmates of Larry Matthews that unfortunately he passed away from Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2021. There was no service or obituary so it's very difficult for me to find the exact date of his death. I will add what I know about Larry Matthews He retired from Fleming Foods after working there for 38 years and 4 months. He continued to play baseball/softball throughout his life. He was sanctioned with the seniors of the world playing softball which he began at the age of 50. He played in seven World Championships and traveled the United States playing ball in senior tournaments. I know he played ball up until the time he could not. He enjoyed hiking and backpacking when not playing ball. I believe a couple times he backpacked from Mesa all the way to the White Mountains. Larry's wife preceded him in death and he often talked highly of her and the influence she had on him. I don't believe Larry ever missed a class reunion or class get together. He was lifelong friends with Tony and Jean Hyland, Dennis Balke, Louis and Sandy Dungy (64) among others. I know whenever I called him he was very kind, willing to discuss the class of 63 and always said yes to attending the reunion. He informed me of the lymphoma not long after the 55th reunion and was sure hoping to beat this cancer. He and many others will be missed at our 60th.
