JAMES FRANCIS PORTER

No. of grandchildren: 3
Deceased: James Francis Porter, son of Gilbert F. and Irma L. Porter was born July 8, 1943 in Baltimore, Maryland and was called home to our Lord on December 19, 2017. Jim was raised near Johnstown, Pennsylvania, before the family moved to Mesa, Arizona in 1960, where Jim graduated from Mesa High School and attended ASU.
Jim became a deputy with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, where he received numerous citations and awards, including Deputy of the Year, and Law Enforcement Officer of the Year from the Sons of the American Revolution. He spent most of his 28-year career with the MCSO Tactical Operations Unit, and gained nationwide respect for his expertise and training techniques both with other law enforcement agencies and with the military. Jim was also involved with other departments including Aviation, K-9 and Lake Patrol where he made life-long friends.
Jim’s greatest accomplishment, however, was that of a devoted family man. A faithful and loving husband to his bride, Judy, of over 50 years, father to his two daughters, and “Papa” to his grandchildren. Jim was always there with his unfailing support, quick wit, and mischievous smile. Jim was a loyal friend and confidant to many. He was also a humble humanitarian, quietly giving of his time and creativity to organizations such as the Masonic Lodge, Boy Scouts of America and many others. Jim was also a great lover of animals, and he never met a dog he didn’t like.
Jim is survived by his wife Judith, daughters, Mary Cathryn Wooldridge (Gary Mann) and Kelly Anne Porter-Schiessl (Joey Schiessl); grandchildren Michaela and Charles James “Riley” Wooldridge; step-grandchildren Acacia and TonyJohn Schiessl; mother Irma Porter; sister Janet Thomas; brother Kenneth; and brother-in-law Robert LaBorde; along with numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father Gilbert F. Porter, brother Gilbert H. Porter and brother in-law- Thomas H. LaBorde. Jim will be greatly missed.
Services will be held at Resurrection Catholic Church, 3201 S. Evergreen Rd., Tempe, AZ 85282 on Friday, January 12, 2018. Ceremonies will begin at 9:45am with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice of the Valley or the 100 Club of Arizona.
